At the palace in Thanjuvar, there is a collection of magnificent bronze sculptures. The most magnificent of them all is a gloriously relaxed and serene Shiva. We were told that this sculpture has traveled to over twenty major museums around the world, where, I am certain, people queued up to pay big bucks to marvel at its exquisite simplicity. Here, at it’s home, it is displayed in a rather dingy case in which the light bulb has burned out and not been replaced. For want of a light bulb, this incredible piece of art stands in obscurity. If it weren’t for the peace and tranquility that the statue conveys, one would almost weep.
