Along the Douro River

Although Michael and I are now back home in Salem, I want to post a couple of entries with photos showing the landscapes that we drifted and wandered through. The Douro River is not very long (at least the part in Portugal) but the scenery is beautiful. The hills are composed of schist (shale) and for centuries, people have broken it up, formed it into terraces, and grown grapes on it. We visited several spectacularly situated vineyards during our cruising and learned quite a bit about the cultivation of the grapes and the production of the wine. Here is a sampling from the Douro valley.
